Traditional therapies are classified as "top-down", as they focus on thoughts, insights, analyzing and examining your story.
Somatic Experiencing is considered a "bottom-up" approach. Because trauma, burnout, and C-PTSD reside in the nervous system and the body the focus is put on tracking tension, bodily sensations, as well as incomplete defense mechanisms. It is not necessary to recount the details of the particular traumatizing event, which is especially helpful with preverbal memories and when we have no memories of the past event.
There are times when we intellectualize events thinking if we can just figure it out things will feel better. The truth is, we can understand what went wrong, have all the tools available to manage the anxiety but still feel awful. Learning how to drop down into the body and be with our sensations, allows processing and capacity to expand. This isnt always an easy thing to do. With Somatic Experiencing, the processing and learning is slow, titrated and done at the pace that suits your individual nervous system.
Sessions look a lot like a standard therapy session, however when you arrive we will take a minute to orient to the space and get comfortable. A session is a combination of some talk and noticing your bodily responds in the present moment. (e.g. changes in your breath, muscle tension, a heavy feeling, numbness etc. )
We move through gently and slowly , tracking these sensations so your nervous system can safely process and release the stress at a pace that is comfortable to you.
Yes, in most cases. Because I am a Registered Social Worker (RSW), my services are covered by the majority of health care plans. I can direct bill to NIHB, Victims Services, and Blue Cross. Having said that, it is always a good idea to check with your benefits provider.
I run my practice out of a discreet, quiet, home office in Warman, sk. Unlike busy, multidisciplinary clinics, my office space offers complete privacy. There is no crowded waiting room where you might run into colleagues or neighbours. You can park easily, walk in, and immediately enter a calm, safe sanctuary designed explicitly for nervous system rest.
I also offer secure, virtual sessions for clients living anywhere within the province of Saskatchewan.
Yes. When you experience compassion fatigue or chronic burnout, your nervous system is often stuck in a "functional freeze" or collapse state-you feel numb, checked out, or physically exhausted. Somatic Experiencing is specifically designed to gently and safely work with this response without overwhelming your system, helping you reclaim your energy.
