For many people struggling with burnout, compassion fatigue and C-PTSD, work-life balance is a source of feeling guilty and inadequate because you are trying to manage your time and energy with better planning, creating schedules and pure willpower.
When you are embodied, you shift focus from time management to working with your physiology and managing your energy. True balance is having a flexible nervous system, as opposed to a constant to do list.
By using body based Somatic Experiencing, we work together to help your nervous system to shift between professional workplace stress to restorative rest. Instead of attempting to force a restful state, we work toward learning how to work with your body in being able to put down the armour.
by learning to listen to your body's natural rhythms and cues you are able to gently work with your physiology as opposed to forcing things to happen. This ultimately quietens the brains fight or flight response.
Compassion fatigue is a state of physical and emotional exhaustion caused by working with/absorbing the suffering and trauma of those around you. It is a response to unprocessed stress in the nervous system. Physical symptoms can manifest as shallow breathing, tight shoulders, emotional numbness, a racing heart, etc.
Such things as working in a high stress position, or being a caregiver without relief can contribute to compassion fatigue. When we are unable to pause or take time to process traumatic situations (anything which overwhelms the nervous system) our bodies stay locked in a chronic sate of collapse or arousal.
